Apple appears to have blocked iPhone applications related to the Dalai Lama in its China App Store, making it the latest U.S. technology company to censor its services in China.

Those apps, which appear in most countries’ versions of the App Store, do not currently appear in the Chinese version. Another app related to Rebiya Kadeer, who like the Dalai Lama is an exiled minority leader reviled by China’s authorities, is unavailable in the China App Store as well. The apparent censorship comes after carrier China Unicom launched iPhone sales two months ago, making regulatory approval of the phone’s contents in the country necessary for the first time.

“We continue to comply with local laws,” Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said in an e-mail when asked about the missing apps. “Not all apps are available in every country”

At least five iPhone apps related to the Dalai Lama are unavailable in the China store. Some of those apps — named Dalai Quotes, Dalai Lama Quotes and Dalai Lama Prayerwheel — display inspirational quotes from the Tibetan spiritual leader. Another, Paging Dalai Lama, tells users where he is currently teaching. A fifth app, Nobel Laureates, contains information about Nobel Prize winners including the Dalai Lama.

Test searches done on four out of five iPhones displayed at the Apple Store in Beijing this month returned no results for the term “Dalai.” The apps also did not appear for searches done with a computer on iTunes after switching the country selection in the program to China. One of the iPhones at the Apple Store did display the Dalai Lama apps, though it was unclear why.

Chinese officials condemn the Dalai Lama as a dangerous “splittist” seeking to separate Tibet from China, and have called him a “devil with a human face.” The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 after Chinese troops crushed an uprising in the capital city of Lhasa, solidifying Chinese control there. The religious figure remains widely revered by Tibetans.

Kadeer, an exiled leader of China’s Uighur minority group, gets similar treatment by Chinese officials and state media. An iPhone app named 10 Conditions, based on a documentary about her life, also did not appear in test searches of the App Store in China.

Apple lets developers choose in which countries’ versions of the App Store to sell their products, but it is unlikely that the Kadeer and Dalai Lama apps are unavailable in China by the choice of their makers. The app about Kadeer was submitted to the App Stores in all countries, James Boldiston, the app’s developer, said in an e-mail. Other developers said they could not recall if they had excluded China, but most had other apps for sale in the China store, showing that in other cases they had included the country.

“Given that Apple has cooperated with China before (by not distributing games), it’s of course very likely that it’s Apple, not the developers, that are preventing certain apps from appearing,” said one China-based app developer, who asked not to be named, in an e-mail. Games were not sold in the China App Store before recent months.

Boldiston and other developers of the missing items said Apple had not told them their apps were unavailable in China.

“I didn’t know the app had been pulled, and wasn’t informed,” said James Sugrue, who designed the Dalai Quotes app. “Apple reserve[s] the right to do this sort of thing, and while from a censorship point of view I disagree with this, I can understand why they did,” he said.

Apple joins other U.S. technology giants including Yahoo and Google that have come under fire for complying with Chinese government demands on sensitive political issues. Human rights advocates criticized Yahoo when Shi Tao, a Chinese journalist, landed a 10-year prison sentence in 2005 partly because of e-mail evidence gained from his private Yahoo account. Yahoo said it was obeying Chinese law by handing the evidence to authorities.

Google has been criticized for offering a censored version of its search engine for China at Google.cn, which blocks pornographic and some politically sensitive search results. Google has similarly said it must follow local laws and regulations.

Chinese authorities previously took aim at Apple last year during the Beijing Olympics, when the U.S. iTunes Music Store was blocked in China after it started selling a new collection of songs about Tibet. The U.S. iTunes Music Store and App Store are both currently accessible from Beijing.

The Chinese iPhone also appears to be subject to the country’s set of Internet controls known by critics as the “Great Firewall.” Searching the App Store for “Falun Gong,” the name of a spiritual sect banned in China as a cult, caused iPhones in the Beijing Apple Store to display a results loading screen indefinitely, though no Falun Gong apps appear to be offered in any countries. In contrast, searches for other terms quickly returned a results page.

Other iPhone apps that might be seen as sensitive by Chinese authorities are still offered in the China App Store. Apps that, for instance, show YouTube videos or let users update their Twitter accounts remain available even though YouTube and Twitter are blocked on the Internet in China.

Offshore Oil and Gas Industry 2009 – Market Report

This Report analyses the UK offshore oil and gas industry and covers activities in waters surrounding the UK, known as the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). In 2008, total sales for oil, gas and related products amounted to £39.73bn, up by 28.7% on the previous year. Government taxes and royalties attributable to UK oil and gas production in 2008/2009 were £12.98bn, an increase of 65.7% on 2007/2008. Production of oil and gas in the UKCS is declining: the 150.1 million tonnes of oil equivalent produced in 2008 was 5.1% less than in the previous year and 25.8% less than in 2004. Imports are increasing as a result of declining indigenous production.  ( http://www.bharatbook.com/detail.asp?id=129658&rt=Offshore-Oil-and-Gas-Industry-Market-Report.html )

The UK offshore oil and gas industry is now mature and some of the early investors are selling some of their less productive assets, mostly to smaller companies. The more recent discoveries are generally smaller and more difficult to develop than the earlier discoveries. As a result, some of the major oil/gas companies are focusing on other areas of the world with better short- and long-term prospects than the UKCS.

Government strategy on energy addresses the issues of energy security, affordability and sustainability. There is also emphasis on a low-carbon Britain, a factor that works against the oil and gas industry with its high carbon emissions. Part of UK government strategy is growth in low-carbon renewable energy and nuclear power; both factors that reduce the potential market for oil and gas. Although this reduced-carbon future for the UK puts pressure on the use of oil and gas, these two fuels will be required for the foreseeable future. The UK is now in an era of rising oil and gas imports, a scenario that favours the use of all the oil and gas that the UKCS can produce. As UKCS reserves become depleted, offshore structures that no longer have a use will have to be removed, an additional cost for the industry.

Regarding imports, the UK will have to compete to an increasing extent in world markets for its oil and gas. This involves importing from countries that, due to very different cultural backgrounds, are not natural trading partners for the UK. Some of these regions are somewhat politically unstable. To satisfy the UK gas requirement, liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports will increase and there will continue to be activity in the UK expanding gas storage facilities and developing LNG terminals. Very significant reserves still exist in the UKCS but development will require substantial investment. Due to the current economic downturn in the UK some of these investments may be delayed.

When I first came in to contact with internet marketing it was through a company called Carbon Copy PRO.  The pitch to join them was that they would teach you how to sell anything, to anyone, anywhere and that once you knew how to market online you would have a valuable skill that would allow you to succeed in any business.

I listened to the sales pitch and it made sense to me, but I still had my doubts.  I joined Carbon Copy PRO and figured that at least I could make some money selling their products and if I happened to learn something valuable and marketable so much the better.

Then something amazing happened and my eyes were opened to the true value of the skills I have learned.  I was at a Real Estate Investors Convention.  I was there because my wife is an investor and I was sort of tagging along.  I was asked to share something that would be of value to the group.  I told them that I was an Internet Marketer and I knew how to use social media, twitter, facebook and youtube to build brand recognition and direct traffic to a website.

They practically swarmed over me asking for information!  Here I was surrounded by a group of 6 figure earners and self made millionaires and they were mobbing me like I had the key to Fort Knox in my hand, and so I did.  It turns out that what I have learned by studying Internet Marketing is much more valuable than I had realized.  It is transferable and useful to any business and that makes it powerful.

I started promoting my wife’s real estate business about 2 weeks ago.  Her website isn’t even live yet, but I built her Twitter, FaceBook, YouTube and LinkedIn profiles.  I posted some tweets and updates and linked her accounts.  She has already seen some very profitable business from just these sources.

Now I understand the power of these skills.  It is just like going to college to earn your degree except that it doesn’t cost you $100,000 or 4 years of your life.  You can start making money within a couple of months.  You can learn to do this just like I did.  It does take dedication and hard work to master these skills, but it isn’t rocket science.  Once you learn the basics you can quickly get up and running.

When I began this journey I really didn’t know what to expect.  Three months later I was able to quit a full time job I had held for thirty years.  Now I am happy to work from home along side my wife who is enjoying greater success in her business thanks to my marketing skills.

Is internet marketing a valuable skill to learn?  It certainly has been for me.

The final secret is to find the communities in your market. There are already websites where thousands of your potential customers hang out. Find them and join up. Answer questions and help people. Then, they will start searching the web for you. Build up your reputation and simply help others. It takes time and a bit of effort, but before long you will have a raving audience by simply becoming part of the community and helping people that are already interested in what you do.

You should also be building relationships with your customers. The better they know you and like you, the more likely they are to buy from you and your company. Do a show on Ustream, respond to comments on your blog posts, and deliver content they can devour and enjoy.

The fourth secret is relationships. Building the right relationships for your business can get you immediate massive traffic. My email is full of joint venture requests every day. I pay attention to people that I care about. Consider how much easier it is to reach out to a friend and ask for their help. Wouldn’t that work better than sending a spammy email to someone you don’t know?

Secret number three is remembering to treat your audience like real people. Most focus on numbers, statistics, and conversion more than they should… Every one of your prospects is a human being, not a number. Do you enjoy those annoying popup windows? They may not like it either. Think about your customers first and the experience they have on your sites. You have to keep two specific things in mind – your sales and the experience of thos that come to your site. You should think of both to get better sales with the same amount of traffic.

Secret two is your story. People don’t want to do business with companies, they want to work with people. What is the reason you sell what you do? Do you have an interesting background story related to your business? Do you sell your products because of something that happened to you in the past? Your story will bring more sales and better customers. It qualifies people and helps them get to know the real you. The perception of you that your customer takes from what you do is important and some things may be best left unsaid.
A great way to talk to people is Twitter. Find people that talk about what you are doing in your business by using Twitter’s search function. Follow them to stay updated on what they do and interact with your audience. As you talk to more people, you gain the attention of others who will talk to you.

The first secret is to have interesting, public conversations. Have conversations with others in your niche, and your potential customers. You can do this via your blog by linking to blog posts on other blogs that are interesting to you. Swipe their ideas to help you create something your customers would want to read. Post a link to their post inside yours and they get a notice called a “trackback in their comments. Most of the time, this will start a conversation that will bring you both more targeted traffic.

The web is changing and there are specific things that nobody seems to discuss about how you can reach more people. Did you know that it actually takes less effort then before? By realizing some things about your customers and the way the internet is going, you can reach more people now.
